The many moods of Ely

One of the things I look for in a Senior Model is personality - when you come for your Top Senior Model interview, make sure to let all the facets of YOUR personality shine through! Here's an example, two completely different sides of my first Senior Model, the lovely Ely...

Top Model for Class of 2010!

okay, I HAD to include at least ONE image of Ely, especially since I posted one of her little brother first...you're going to see ALOT more of her this next year as she's one of my Top Models for the HRVHS Class of 2010! and I think she is DEFINITELY a '10, don't you?!!

I think I used up my monthly quota for capitalization with this post... : )

Little Brother

Photographed the gorgeous Ely, one of my Top Models for the Class of 2010, in the studio last Friday - got SOOOO many great images, I'm STILL editing and trying to pick the very best ones to present! Even though there's still so much work to do, I couldn't resist playing with this shot of Ely's brother and thought I'd share it with you all...(I was really impressed with what a great little brother he was - helpful, cooperative and alot of fun to have around! Now why couldn't MY little brothers have been like that?!!)

Soroptimist Spring Bling!

I had a wonderful time at last Saturday's Spring Bling! luncheon put on by Soroptimist International Hood River! This annual event was started last year to celebrate SIHR's 60th year anniversary of service to women and girls of Hood River. A new twist this year was the addition of three custom jewelry vendors who displayed their creations for purchase - hence the "Bling!" in the title! Showcasing their glittering bling were Jewelry by Cari (ahem - the photo used in her Mother's Day promo shows Cari and her adorable daughter, Stella - created by yours truly!), Pearl Girl Tags, and Tricia Losee for Silpada Designs. The fashion show was such a hit last year, we HAD to have our local style mavens back! Showcasing their latest designs were Ananas Boutique, Flow Day Spa, Frolik, Melika, Outside Baby and Parts + Labor.

As a member of SIHR, my contribution to the event was the set up of a mini-studio where I created portraits for mothers and daughters as a fundraiser for SIHR's charitable programs. Many thanks to all the women who participated and helped make this luncheon a
FUNdraising success!

Puppy Update

I
t's been 3 months since I last took my adorable puppy's portrait! (right about the same time I got sick AND lost/misplaced my much-loved point and shoot camera...) So last week, almost exactly 8 months from the day she was born, I attempted to create more portraits of my precious Sofie. These are the two best from that brief session - I say 'brief' because, well, have YOU ever tried to take a formal photo of an Airedale?!! it ain't easy, lemme tell ya... I'm having the close-up shot printed as a 16" x 20" gallery wrap for my office! C'mon, admit it - ain't that the cutest face you've seen in a long time?!!

Happy April Fool's Day!

To honor this most under-appreciated day and because I've been working on my taxes for the last few days, I'm sharing one of my favorite cartoon strips from What the Duck? (check WTD out at www.WhatTheDuck.net!)

Collage Happiness!

I LOVE designing portrait collages, especially for baby clients! With SO MANY wonderful images of this adorable baby girl to choose from, the best solution for clients who want it ALL is collages and, of course, custom-designed books (more on those later)...I can't wait to show these to her parents - and yep, you're right - that's Cari Streeter's beautiful baby again...

Just one more!

I meant to add this to the previous post - this is one of the prettiest "Madonna" images I have ever created! It is for sure destined to become a large display print in my studio...

Feels like comin' home...

Like so many others this winter, I have been laid low with "the cold that won't go away" - you know, the one that morphs into something even nastier every time you think you're FINALLY starting to get better?!! Knock on wood, I think I finally have it beat this time...so last Saturday I doubled up on my Vitamin C and got ready for my first real portrait session in two months. I admit to being a little nervous, but once that camera was in my hands it all came back to me in a rush - it felt like coming home.

What an afternoon it was - I had the pleasure of working with Stella, THE most adorable 6 month old little girl, who had the temperment of a Buddhist monk and the smile of an angel! And her parents, Cari and Rory, who were uber-cool and so much fun...days like this, I just LOVE my job! Stella performed like a seasoned model as we put her in one outfit after another and a myriad of set changes - I've never been able to create so much variety from one 6 month old portrait session ever!

I seem to be using ALOT of exclamation points, but you would understand WHY if you'd been there - better yet, if you could see the final images! Oh wait, this is the internet, I can SHARE a few of Stella's amazing images with you - that's her up there; ain't she just the sweetest little bean?!!

I don't want to forget this part: Stella's mom, Cari, designs the most wonderful jewelry - please check out her website at www.jewelrybycari.com to see her fabulous designs for yourself!

Operation: Love Reunited

I am happy to announce that Photosensitive Portraits is now a member of Operation: Love Reunited (OpLove for short), a nationwide group of professional photographers volunteering FREE professional photography sessions for military service members and their loved ones. These special sessions are for deploying, deployed and returning military families.

As a member of OpLove, Photosensitive Portraits offers a pre-deployment (or already deployed) session and a reunited session at the homecoming of the military member. To help keep his family and loved ones a little closer, a 4×6 album with 10 images from the deployment session will be created and sent at no charge to the deployed service member. For the homecoming, a dvd with a slide show of images will be created and presented to the family at no charge.

***Please note that orders and current military ID may be requested. Pre-deployment sessions in which the deploying spouse or loved one is participating, should include their military uniform, dress, working, or BDUs, being worn for most of the session. If a session takes place and the spouse has already been deployed, the session is required to keep a patriotic theme, including military gear such as hats, uniforms, boots, etc.***

Please visit www.OpLove.org for more information.

In addition to the sessions and services offered through OpLove, Photosensitive Portraits also offers a military discount to all active duty military whether deployed or not. Please call 541-436-2755 for details.

Holy Cow, it's 2009 already?!!

I feel like I've lost the last two months of my life...where did they go?!

See, I traditionally close the business down in December and January, to better enjoy my own holiday season and also take that time to get things ready for the start of a New Year. Unfortunately, in early December I caught what I thought was just a bad cold - that cold continued to morph itself over the next six weeks until I finally collapsed with severe bronchitis and a throat infection! Ugh.

The good news is that I (finally!) dragged myself in to a doctor and was promptly medicated within an inch of my life. I'm on the mend, out of bed, walking, talking, heck even THINKING and getting a little bit of work done too! Sure is nice to have a clear head again...

Many thanks to all of you who called or wrote asking how I was - especially my good friends from Portland, Daron (a fine photographer) and his gorgeous fiance, Tara (both Daron's and my favorite model AND an amazing artist)...I was feeling good enough for company the day they visited and we all played with my brand new toy, a ringflash - that's Daron and Tara being goofy in the photos atop this blog entry.

More exciting new things coming from from Photosensitive Portraits in 2009! So watch this space!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am thankful today and every day for
the unwavering love and support of Steve, my hunky husband of 22 years.

I am thankful for the old friends
that have stuck with me through the wild ride that's been the last 30 years: Alica, Lucy, Maia - I am so blessed to be able to name three BFFs!

I am grateful to
photography, for giving me a way to express myself and a channel for touching many lives in a positive and meaningful way.

Photography has also brought me talented and generous mentors who I can also count as dear friends:
EJ Knapp, who wields a pen now with the same artistry he brought to his photography - check out his blog and see for yourself.
Jay Jones
, THE most versatile and creative photographer I have ever met (truly the "McGyver" of Photography!) - I am so proud to be a part of his "family".
Bob Weaver, for his incredible depth of knowledge of studio lighting that he has so patiently shared with me and the many creative collaborations we enjoy.
Monte Zucker, who not only taught me how to grow as a portrait artist, but helped me grow as a human being as well.

Which leads me to all the wonderful people I've met at
clients over the years and who have become friends - that's the highest compliment I could receive as a photographer!

I am grateful for the new friends I've made here in Hood River:
Louise McCulloch - World's Best Realtor, with a Green Thumb that she exercises with great enthusiasm!
Tammy Kravitz - a FABULOUS photographer in Washougal, WA, who I first met in a photography forum online and who has become both friend and working partner.
Kate Brownback - we met through Soroptimist International of Hood River and NEVER EVER EVER have I met a woman so filled with positive energy and creativity! (I am so glad she uses her super-powers for good!) Plus her two adorable children are my favorites models evah!

And last but not least, I am thankful for
Susan and Roy York of Carson, WA, breeders of extraordinary Airedales, for the World's Bestest Puppy, Sofie! I can't remember what my life was like before she came along, but I know it's oh so much better now!

May you spend the holiday surrounded by family, friends, love and laughter!

Benefit Concert TONIGHT!

Enjoy the incredible song stylings of Hood River's own Makenzie Rose Bassham at 6 pm TONIGHT, November 15th, at the Hood River Middle School Auditorium. In addition to the concert, there will also be a bake sale and silent auction. You could do a little Christmas shopping and bring home dessert for after the concert!

The concert, bake sale and silent auction are part of a project that has been undertaken by this year's freshman Leadership Class at Hood River Valley High School - to raise funds for the Foster Care programs of Hood River DHS Child Welfare. A visit by Soroptimists Judy Jensen, Chavalla Lopez-Bassham and Denise Rehse Watson, who spoke about Soroptimist International of Hood River's plans to renovate the Family Visitation Rooms at the Hood River DHS facility, inspired the class to take on this cause as their own. All members of the class have been involved in the planning and execution of tonight's events, including Makenzie Ross Bassham who is a member of the class.

Tickets are $7.00 for students and $10.00 for adults; tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds go to the Foster Care Programs of Hood River DHS Child Welfare. Tonight's event is presented by the Hood River High School Freshman Leadership Class and sponsored by Soroptimist International of Hood River, Mountain Views Therapeutic Massage and Photosensitive Portraits.

WINE, WOMEN & WOW!
Ordinary women working together to do extraordinary things
.

Soroptimist International of Hood River invites all Gorge women to an "after hours" event to be held Wednesday, October 29th, from 5pm to 7pm at
The Pines Tasting Room located at 202 State Street in Hood River.
There will be a no-host wine bar and complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served. A "goodie bag" will be given to the first 50 women through the doors, courtesy of Photosensitive Portraits; ONE of those bags will contain a Gift Certificate for a FREE Studio Family Portrait Session PLUS an 8x10 Canvas Print, a $300 value!

The event is designed as a forum for women in the Hood River area to get together, have some wine, network and talk about the needs of our area and how we can get involved or partner to achieve goals. This is a great way to meet other interesting and involved women; a chance to promote your own event, project or program and ask for help with it; an excellent way to find out what's going on and learn how YOU can get involved!

If you'd like to reserve space to promote your own organization, project or event, contact Lisa Hargrave at 541-386-4785 or lhargrave@virtualpremise.com - space IS limited, so be sure to reserve YOUR spot as soon as possible!

One of the inspirations for this event was that evocative quote by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich (Women's History professor at Harvard University): "Well-behaved women rarely make history." Let's all get together for an evening of "misbehaving"!
